Hardwood Floor Refinishing in Rhode Island
Professional sanding, staining, and finishing by an owner-operated crew with 30+ years of experience. Serving all of Rhode Island.
Restore Your Floors to Like-New Condition
Hardwood floor refinishing is the most cost-effective way to transform a home. Instead of replacing floors, refinishing strips away years of wear, scratches, and old finish — revealing the natural beauty of the wood underneath.
At Independent Wood Flooring, refinishing is our most requested service and where our 30+ years of expertise shows most clearly. Owner Jayson Matias personally oversees every refinishing job from start to finish. No subcontractors. No surprises.
We follow NWFA (National Wood Flooring Association) guidelines on every project, use professional-grade LOBA and Bona finishes, and take dust containment seriously — zipwalls, plastic sheeting, and whole-house fans are standard on every job.
Whether you have red oak, white oak, maple, pine, or exotic hardwood, we have the knowledge and equipment to get it right. Every refinishing job comes with a 2-year labor warranty.

Hardwood Floor Refinishing in Coventry, RI – A Complete Floor Restoration
A recent hardwood floor restoration in Coventry, RI. The existing prefinished hardwood floors were severely scratched, worn, and carrying an older stained finish — exactly the kind of floor many Rhode Island homeowners consider replacing. Here's what sanding and refinishing did instead.
Coventry, RI — Prefinished Hardwood Refinishing
Watch the complete before-and-after transformation, start to finish.
The prefinished hardwood floors in this Coventry home had taken years of wear. The original factory finish was deeply scratched and scuffed, and an older stained finish underneath had dulled and discolored, leaving the wood looking patchy and tired. Rather than tear out and replace the floors, the homeowner chose hardwood floor restoration.
Independent Wood Flooring completely sanded the floors down to bare wood, removing the old stain and finish and restoring the original natural appearance of the wood. Sanding is the step that decides everything that follows — it removes the scratches, the embedded grit, and the worn topcoat, and it gives the new finish a clean surface to bond to. We use Lagler drum sanders and Clark edgers, with dustless equipment and containment throughout.
Once the floor was back to bare, clean wood, we protected it with three coats of professional water-based polyurethane. The result is a clean, natural appearance with a durable finish — the kind of finish that holds up to daily family traffic and is easy to maintain. Three coats give the floor depth and protection without the ambering you get from older oil-based systems, so the wood keeps its true, natural color.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does hardwood floor refinishing take?
A typical sanding and refinishing job takes about 3 days from start to finish — one day for sanding, one for staining (if applicable), and one for the final finish coats. Larger homes or multi-coat jobs may take a day or two longer.
How often should hardwood floors be refinished?
Most hardwood floors benefit from refinishing every 7–10 years, depending on traffic and wear. With proper maintenance, you can extend this significantly.
What finishes do you use?
We primarily use LOBA waterbase finishes, Bona, and DuraSeal. We offer waterbase polyurethane, oil base polyurethane, and all commercial finishes — we'll help you choose the right one for your home and lifestyle.
Will there be dust in my home?
We use dustless sanding equipment, zipwalls, plastic sheeting, and whole-house fans for dust exhaust. We work hard to contain dust — it's one of the ways we stand out from other RI contractors.
Can you match my existing floor color?
Yes. We offer a full range of custom stain colors and can match or blend with adjacent floors. We test stain samples directly on your floor before committing.
Do I need to move my furniture?
Yes. Furniture needs to be removed from the areas being refinished before we arrive. We can advise on what's needed during your free estimate visit.
