Hardwood Restoration & New White Oak Installation — Portsmouth, Rhode Island

A Portsmouth homeowner had a section of hardwood that had failed beyond what a refinish alone could correct. The question was whether the whole floor needed to come out, or whether the damaged area could be removed and rebuilt so cleanly that the repair disappeared into the rest of the home.

The Challenge

The damaged section of flooring had to be removed without compromising the boards around it, and the subfloor beneath needed to be assessed before any new material went down.

The larger challenge was integration. New white oak was going to sit beside existing flooring, and the two had to read as one continuous floor — not a patch, and not a visible line where old met new.

Our Approach

We treated this as a restoration that happens to include new installation, not a replacement. The first step was diagnosing how far the damage actually extended, so only what needed to come out came out.

With the damaged boards removed and the subfloor prepped, new white oak was installed in the affected area and then the entire floor — new and existing together — was sanded and refinished as one. Refinishing the whole surface together is what allows the integration to disappear: same finish, same sheen, one uninterrupted plane.

The Process

  1. 01 · Diagnosis & removal

    Identified the extent of the damage, removed the compromised boards, and exposed the subfloor for inspection.

  2. 02 · Subfloor preparation

    Confirmed the subfloor was sound and prepped it to accept the new installation.

  3. 03 · New white oak installation

    Installed new white oak in the removed area, matched to the existing board profile.

  4. 04 · Integration

    Worked the transition between new and existing flooring so the joint reads as a continuous floor, including flush-mount vent detailing.

  5. 05 · Sanding & refinishing

    Sanded the entire floor — new and existing together — and applied the finish across the whole surface as one.

Materials & Finish

New white oak flooring was installed in the restored area and integrated with the existing hardwood. The full floor was sanded and finished on site as one continuous surface.

The Result

The damaged section is gone, replaced with new white oak that blends into the existing floor. Because the whole surface was sanded and refinished together, the transition between old and new doesn't read as a repair — it reads as one floor.
